Helen Cameron Moorman's Obituary
Helen Cameron Moorman, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at her residence. Helen attended West Main Street Elementary and Howard High School. She attended Knoxville College, initially, where she was inducted into the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority (Gamma Eta Chapter) 1955, then transferred to Tennessee State University (TSU). Helen joined Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. While at TSU, she met Lawrence Moorman, and they married on June 28, 1959. Helen worked for The Dayton Public School System for over 30 years as an English Teacher, Curriculum Facilitator, School Services Advisor, Assistant Principal and concluded her tenure as a Principal at Belle Haven Elementary, then retired in 1993. She obtained her M.A. Administration and Supervision at Wright State University. She attended Harvard University and received a certification for the Harvard Summer Principal Institute. After retirement, Helen became an education consultant to Dayton Public Principals and motivational speaker. She also started a travel company with Janis Bryant-Hayes “It’s My Journey Travel” which was successful for ten years. Helen was very active in AKA Sorority, Beta Eta Omega Chapter, Dayton, Ohio, for 65 years. She was the Chapter Historian, and served on various committees: Membership, Scholarship, Cotillion and December Luncheon Committees. Helen was recently honored as a Pearl Soror in the Inaugural Class of 2020. She was awarded the Jessie Hathcock Soror of the Year in 1988, The Eagle Award and AKA Sorority Community Award. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence A. Moorman, USAF; parents, Jasper Cameron, Sr. and Emma Bell Cameron (Simmons); aunt, Georgia Lee Greer. She was the first of eight of her family to depart this life. She leaves to cherish her memory, son, Vincent Moorman, Marvin (Ellen) Moorman, and daughter, Soror Terri (Roger) Iriajen; grandchildren, Taisia Moorman, Ryan Iriajen, Nathaniel Iriajen, DeAnna Iriajen, Tene Russell, and Takara Russell; siblings, Jasper “Jay” (Mary) Cameron, Jr., Aaron (Doris) Cameron, Sr., George (Virginia) Cameron, Sandra (Johnny – deceased) King, Dollie Ann (Rudy) Hamilton, Jimmy Cameron, and Vella Cameron; aunt, Alberta Jones; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted friends. Brother John R. Taylor, Sr. will serve as eulogist.
