I heard about the funeral after the fact as I surely would had been there. It was a real pleasure to know Gertrude. I use to take her to Dollar Tree so she could buy the Werthers hard candy that she loved. She was always polite and respectful and offered money for gas although I would seldom ask. When we got back to Gateway she would say, "You made my day" She will be very much missed. My condolences to the family. Lon Cartwright
I did not know until I was at church this past Sunday that Gertrude had passed away. She was my buddy there. We sat next to each other for years. I was fond of telling her she was as cute as a porcelain doll. Even now, I still have in my bags some hard candy and gum that I was saving to share with her. I had kept hoping that I would see her again.Many times through the months and years, she would say to me (or to me and my husband), “God put you in my life for a reason.” I would say the words back to her. They were all the more meaningful because her words were those of a Black person to a white person or white people. Another thing that I remember about her is that she really knew her Bible. I miss her and will continue to miss her. I will also continue to pray for her family.
I met Miss Gertrude through T the Mustard Tree Ministry at First Centenary United Methodist Church. She would come every Sunday for the evening service and dinner. We were all so fond of this sweet lady that was always dressed so well and looked much younger than her age. We usually sat at the same dinner table together and enjoyed talking to each other. We will all miss this sweet lady. Heaven gained a sweet lady. I bet she told the Lord “ I’m better now that I’ve seen you.”
