Viola Spotts-Dawson's Obituary
Viola Elizabeth Duncan Spotts-Dawson, 94, of Chattanooga, passed away at her residence on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 4:10 a.m. surrounded by her three children who witnessed together as Ma’Vila closed her eyes to Earth’s challenges and opened them to Heaven’s Glories. She was born on July 20, 1928, to Thomas and Flora Duncan in Bloomfield, Kentucky, where she spent her early years surrounded by family and friends until her family moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1940. She attended Central Colored High School in Louisville and went on to work after High School at the Brown Hotel, where she met and later married, Rev. George M. Spotts in 1954. From their union, three children were born, Vanessa, Gregory, and Garry Spotts. Mrs. Spotts was baptized at Bates Memorial Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky at an early age. She and her family moved to the Zion Baptist Church of Louisville, KY in 1970 and remained there until 1992, when she moved to Goldsboro, NC to assist Vanessa and her family during a military deployment. She later moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee in 2003 and remained there helping her family and serving the New Home Missionary Baptist Church, where her son, Elder G.M. Spotts pastors. A faithful follower of Jesus Christ, she served the Lord with fervor and passion until the Lord called her to sweet rest in His bosom. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Duncan; mother, Flora Duncan; sister, Lucille Maddox; brother, Edward Montgomery; her husband, Rev. George M. Spotts; her husband, Willie Dawson; and her grandson, Gyasi M. Spotts. She leaves to carry her legacy of Love forward, her sister, Nellie F. Duncan; her daughter, Vanessa Spotts; sons, Elder G. M. (Tavis) Spotts and Elder Garry M. (Annette) Spotts, children-in-love, Tonya and Tony Johnson; grandchildren, Valanna White, Shukura Adams, Geordan Spotts, Thea Spotts, and Jessica Carlisle; great-grandchildren, Gavin Spotts, Greg White, Aniya Adams, GeMari Spotts, Aiden Adams, Venise, Justice White, Violet White, and Anikan Adams; great-great-grandson, Granson Spotts; and a multitude of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Mrs. Spotts-Dawson will lie-in-state on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Greater New Home Missionary Baptist Church, 2809 13th Avenue, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37407. Her Homegoing Service will follow at 12 noon at the church with Elder G. M. Spotts as the eulogist. Burial in Highland Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home of Chattanooga, Inc.
