Tammy Eileen Owens' Obituary
Tammy Eileen “Latifah” Harris-Owens was born on January 24, 1966, in Newark, NJ to Frances Evans and Willie Ferguson.
Tammy finished her earthly journey on January 4, 2025, at the age of 58 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances & Willie; brothers, Dennis Evans and Kevin Harris; and sisters, Ruth “Peaches” Payton, Bernice “Intisaar” Boone and Teresa “Terry” Graham. She was the baby and the last sibling to gain her wings.
Tammy was brought up in a Christian home and received Christ at an early age. Her education started in the Newark Public School System. Tammy attended East Orange High School until she relocated to Cassadaga, New York, where she obtained an Office Skills Trade from Job Corp.
Upon completion from school, Tammy worked as an office clerk in New Jersey. She later transitioned into the hospitality industry, where she was a housekeeper and laundry attendant for over twenty years.
Tammy was a member of Allen Temple AME Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Tammy was a beautiful, free spirited, loving woman who cared for everyone she came in contact with. She never met a stranger. Tammy always kept a smile on her face. Her smile would light up any room as soon as she walked in. She danced her way through life no matter the circumstances. Singing Karaoke was one of her favorite things to do. If there was a mic around, she was surely on it.
Tammy was a true comedian. She would have a disagreement with you today and call the next day like nothing ever happened. She could not hold grudges because her heart was so big. She enjoyed being with family and friends. Tammy could be seen often with best friends Rhonda Halfacre, Diane Marshall and Paul Moore. She will now reunite with her childhood best friend, the late Lisa Plant-Davis.
In her younger years, Tammy was known as Latifah. She was crazy, sneaky, adventurous, funny and outspoken. She did what she wanted to do and said what she wanted to say no matter who liked it. She did not play about her family or close friends. Latifah was always the life of any party and remained that way her entire life. She was a fighter and fought until God called her home.
She leaves to mourn her children, Kashara Brown, Keair Goodman, Alzaivion Owens, Alisha Owens and Aisha Morgan; grandchildren, Al’Laysha Mahoney, Maliah Goodman and Kareem Goodman; special nieces, Shakira Boone, Yolanda Graham and Malika Shabazz-Hammond; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family members and friends.
Tammy will lie-in-state on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Ronald B. Cook, Sr. as Eulogist.
