Sylvester Harris' Obituary
Sylvester Harris, 65, of Chattanooga, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at his residence, leaving a legacy of dedication to his family and community. He was born on February 9, 1959, in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Robert and Betty Harris, passed away. He was a 1977 graduate of Kirkman Technical High School, where he found his passion for vocational training. Sylvester worked as a boilermaker for over 30 years and as a business owner for over 20 years, proud to contribute to a field he believed was crucial for personal and community growth. His advocacy for vocational education was tireless, pushing for more opportunities for children to learn a trade. He understood the importance of skilled labor and fought for it to be valued. Sylvester was an unwavering advocate for East Chattanooga, becoming a voice for the community through his civic engagement. He served on the PARC (Police Advisory and Review Committee) Board, where his passion for bridging the gap between the community and law enforcement was evident. His presence on the board was formidable—when Sylvester spoke, his words commanded attention. His vision for a better, more connected Chattanooga was clear, and he worked relentlessly to ensure the voices of his neighbors were heard. More than anything, Sylvester cherished his family. He adored his three daughters, Brittany Harris of Chattanooga, Shavoshia Leslie of Atlanta, GA, and Sarah Harris of Nashville, TN—and was immensely proud of them. His love for them was boundless, and they will carry on his legacy with pride. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Betty Harris. Sylvester is survived by his daughters; his sister, Gwen Davis of Chattanooga; his niece, Carmen Davis of Chattanooga; Kevin Jefferson, who he served as a father figure to; a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends. He will be remembered for his strength, wisdom, and unyielding commitment to his community and family. His impact will be felt for years to come. We remember Sylvester as a man whose leadership and vision made a difference, and whose love for his family knew no bounds. May his memory bring peace to all who knew him. Sylvester will lie-in-state on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Burial in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.
