Roy Hinton, Jr.'s Obituary
Mr. Roy Clifford Hinton, Jr. was born December 29, 1940, in Chickamauga, Georgia to Roy Clifford Hinton, Sr. and Ara Lee (Foster) Hinton. Roy went to sleep peacefully on April 18, 2026, at the home of his daughter in Murfreesboro, Tennessee while surrounded by his children, concluding a day of pampering, singing, and praying.
Roy was an alumnus of Hill High School, LaFayette, Georgia, Class of 1959, where he was the Salutatorian of his graduating class. He also attended Walker County Technical College and received his Auto Mechanic certification. Along with his academic excellence, Roy excelled throughout his adulthood in multiple careers where he eventually retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad as a Diesel Machinist. He was known as a humble man and could fix anything he put his hands or mind on, “Jack of All Trades”. Roy accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was a former member of Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church and later found his home at Mount Canaan to finish serving our Lord and Savior.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; former spouse, Elizabeth S. Hinton, sister, Mary Hinton and nephew, Keith Hinton both from New York, brothers-in-law, John Funderburk, Rufus Shelton, James Clifford Shelton, Sr., and sisters-in-law, Aubria Jean Shelton and Reba Sue Southern.
Roy leaves to cherish his memories spouse, Gloria Hinton of Chattanooga, TN; two sons, Gregory Royce (Lois) Hinton of Chattanooga, TN, Rodney (Larie) Hinton of Knoxville, TN; three daughters, Rosalind Adriene Hinton of Murfreesboro, TN, Ronnette Yvonne (Brian) McElvain of Harrison, TN , Kimberly Hinton, of Chattanooga, TN; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild; sisters, Zelma Hinton, of Lanham, MD, Linda Funderburk, of Bowie, MD; brother-in-law, James Richard Southern of Chickamauga, GA; sister-in-law, Geneva (Pastor William) Tramble of Chickamauga, GA; nephew, Reginald (Shari) Funderburke, of Yardley, PA; niece, Jamilyn Penn, of Steilacoom, WA; a host of great nephews, nieces, cousins, and special friends across Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas; and a very special partner in life, Louvina Smith and family for over 26 years.
Roy will lie-in-state on Monday, May 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Canaan Church. Funeral service will follow at 12:00 Noon at the church with Bishop Ternae Jordan, Sr. as the Eulogist. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
