Percy Ricks Sr.'s Obituary
Percy Ricks, Sr., 97, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, January 12, 2024. Percy Lee Ricks, Sr. was born on November 5, 1926, in Leighton, Alabama, to George and Jossie Owens Ricks. He attended Leighton Training School in Leighton, AL. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. Percy moved to Chattanooga and met the love of his life, Louise “Penny” Lawson and they were married on October 2, 1948, and shared 68 years of marital bliss. From this union was born seven children. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was loved by everyone who knew him. Pop’s to his family and Mr. Percy to his friends and others. He had an undying love for people and brought a smile to the face of everyone he met. He was employed by Turnbull Cone Baking Company for over 50 years. He also worked at Wheland Foundry and Erlanger Health System. He accepted Christ at a young age and was a life long member of Westside Missionary Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his father, George Ricks; mother, Jossie Owens Ricks; wife, Louise “Penny”’ Ricks; brother, John Bell Ricks; sisters, Georgia Mae Ricks Brown, Kathleen Ricks Bean, Ella Ricks King, and Melva Mullin Johnson; daughter, Margaret H. Burt; sons, Norman Ricks, Johnnie Lee Ricks, Sr., Anthony Lebron Ricks, and David Earl Ricks; grandsons, Marlon Ricks and Johnnie Lee Ricks, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memories are sons, Al-Kareem (Florence) Abdullah, George (Maria) Ricks, Sr.; daughter, Regina (Micheal) Ricks Edward; son-in-law, Howard Burt; granddaughters, Francine Ricks Todd, Yvette (Larry) Mason; grandson, Micheal Burt; grandchildren, (Norman) Pamela (Danny) Robinson, Najee, Norman, Jr., Timothy, Shankia, Darius (Dee), Nikki, Corey; (Johnnie) Jelani, Jamelia; (Abdulla) Percena, Penny, Terry, Jameel, Kareem, Lil Al, Michaela, Jamella, Kamillah, Samuel; (Anthony) Anthony Ford, Rickey, Alexandera, Christopher; (George) George, Jr. (Danice), Brandon, Khary, Nikki (Noah) Gechelle; (Regina) Jamichael (Ava), Jamar; (Margaret) Micheal, Yvette, (Ryan, Myles); (Francine) Sonja (Michael, Amina, Jordyn, Taylor); extended family, Ronald, Micheal, Tonya and Angela Benning, Beverly Billingslea, Frankie Ricks and Larry Fuqua; special friends, Leighton Alabama; Edward King, Irene Bates, Edna Belle Mastin, Westside Missionary Baptist Church, Carl and Rosalind Herman, Jeanette Tyner, Bo Green, Carol Johnson, Anthony Mack, Ivan O’Neal, Eve Newby, Brenda Hicks, Clifford Pillows, Eric and Charles Greene, Reginald Ratliff, Robert Church, and Juliet Mark; special thanks, Austin “Fat” Myron, you were like a son to my dad. Thanks again for your help, Hospice of Chattanooga, Dr. Bessie Ingram Nunnally, and Dr. Cody Smith. Mr. Ricks will lie-in-state on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. The family will be accepting friends from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Funeral service will be on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 12 noon at Westside Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor George W. Maize, V as the eulogist. Burial in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
