Peggy A. Fortson's Obituary
Peggy Ann Fortson, 82, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, January 3, 2025, in a local hospital. She was educated in the Chattanooga Public Schools and was a 1961 graduate of Howard High School. Peggy was employed by Loveman’s Department Store as the Lead person in the Alteration Department. She retired after many years of service. She was a faithful member of Monumental Baptist Church where she was a part of the Usher Ministry. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Dollie Bennett; husband, Walter Fortson, Sr.; daughter, Beverly McClendon; son, Thomas Fortson; three sisters, Elois Hickey, Orma Jean Copeland, and Catheron Mason; and five brothers, Edward, Carl, Charles, Billy, and Bobby Bennett; stepsons; and great-great-grandson, Nicholas Davidson, Jr. Survivors include her sons, Willis Andrew (Chandelier) Smartt, III of Stockbridge, GA, Walter Thomas Fortson, Jr., and Timothy Labrone Fortson, both of Chattanooga; daughters, Angela Smartt (James) Cowan of Chattanooga, Sonya (Jordan) Slay of Smyrna, TN, and Sharon Fortson of Winchester, CA; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother, James (Priscilla) Bennett of Las Vegas, NV; sisters, Noreen Posely and Marian Evans, both of Chattanooga; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Peggy will lie-in-state on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 12:30-5:00 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Monumental Baptist Church with Dr. Gregory Odom as the Eulogist. Burial in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
