Nelda Hilda Garrett's Obituary
Nelda Garrett, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the residence of her niece in Augusta, Georgia. She was born on August 25, 1940, the 9th of 9 children to Henry and Hilda Nickelson of the Creek, Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands. After leaving school, Nelda went to Jamaica and worked for a few years. She later moved to the USA with her sister, Murdith in Delaware. Nelda then moved, got a job at a local hospital, and stayed at the YMCA in Newark, New Jersey where she met Robert Garrett. They got married and later moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Following Robert's death in 2023, Nelda moved to Augusta, Georgia with her niece, Elizabeth and her family. On July 8, 2024, she was admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Two weeks ago, her health rapidly declined. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Hilda Nickelson; and siblings, Erica, Morales, Dillard, Alba, Owen, Hazel, and Resel. Left to mourn her passing are her sister, Murdith Nickelson of Wilmington, DE; nieces, Annie, Bernice, and Ormah of Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands, Joy of Lehigh Acres, FL, and Elizabeth of Augusta, GA; nephew-in-law, Louie of Augusta, GA; nephews, Steve, Marcel, Ray, and DeVanney of Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, Miguel of Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands, Tony of New Jersey, and Alen of Wilmington, DE; and a host of other relatives and friends. Nelda will lie-in-state on Monday, July 29, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
