Mattie Florence Tellis Sanders' Obituary
Mattie Florence Tellis Sanders, 82, of Chattanooga, quietly and peacefully slept on to her eternal rest on Friday, August 26, 2022, at her residence. She was born June 18,1940 to the late Virginia Odom and Ross Tellis. She was educated in the Public School System. Florence loved to sing. She sang with various groups in the city including The Gospel Airs, Lady Mass Choir, The Louis Ensemble, Chattanooga Mass Choir, Indian Creek P.B. District Choir, Antioch Senior, and Sanctuary Choir. She was raised in Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Antioch Primitive Baptist where she remained a member for over 50 years. Florence worked at Jackson Manufacturing Water Heaters, the school system and various other jobs. She was a Foster Grandparent for many years. Florence retired from the Residence Inn in 2002. On any given day, you could find Florence downstairs in the Lobby of her Apartment Complex talking and laughing with the Ladies. She loved her grand and great-grandchildren. She was known to them as “Granny” or “Flo”. Each one of them had their own special relationship with her. She will truly be missed by them. Florence was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Odom; father, Ross Tellis; brother, James Odom, Sr.; sister, Lelia Allen; daughter, Vonedieth Tellis; and grandson, Edward Glenn, Jr. Survivors include two daughters, Bessie Tellis and Sherra Glenn Tellis; one brother, Marshall Tools; six grandchildren, Renee Tellis, Maurice Carter, Jr., Jacobia Mays, Jeremy Kyles, Javonna (Cassanova) Lee, and Jacquetta Glenn; one adopted granddaughter, Rakia (Toney) Williams; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; special friends, Jean Lewis, Helen Shackleford, Mary Woods, Charles Toney, and many other friends. Elder Leslie will serve as the eulogist.
