Mary Louise Russell-Green's Obituary
Mary Louise Russell-Green, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in a local hospital. She was born May 17, 1941, in Hogansville, Georgia to the late Leila Mae Russell and Sylvester Jackson. She moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee at a young age where she was educated in the Chattanooga Public School System. She was a proud member of The Howard High School Class of 1957. While at Howard, she obtained her cosmetology license. She went on to work as a beautician for over 50 years. Mary was united in holy matrimony with Jimmie Lee Green, Sr. in July 1960. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children. Mary and Jimmie were married for 49 years until his death separated them in 2009. Mother Mary, as she was known at Christ Hope Missionary Baptist Church, was one of the founding members under the leadership of her nephew, the late Pastor Calvin B. White. She was willing to help in anyway Christ Hope needed her, from singing in the choir to serving as Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Green, Sr.; beloved daughter, Ivy Maria Green; parents, Leila (Lee William) Merrell, Sr. and Sylvester (Coretta) Jackson; mother-in-law, Ida Mae White; father-in-law, John Wesley Green; sisters, Deloris Merrell and Mary Ella (Charles) Adams; brothers, Willie Edward Russell, and Lee William “Lee Jr.” Merrell, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Betty “Dutch” White and Geraldine White; brother-in-law, Pete “Uncle Junebug” Hill, Jr. Mary leaves to carry on her loving memory sons, Jimmie “Junebug” Green, Jr. and Timothy Green; daughter, Bianca (Morris) Chatman, Sr.; grandchildren, Juwana (Eric) Green, Tatum Green, Shauntrell Manuel, Morris Chatman, Jr., MaNiyah Chatman, MaLiyah Chatman, and Icis Russell; great-granddaughter, Morriah Alaina Chatman; brother, Lee Van “Butch” (Theresa) Merrell; brother-in-law, Johnny “Peaches” (Shirley) White; life-long sisters, Joyce Clark, Jacqueline Bradley, and Marva Jarrett; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and fellow church members. Mary will lie-in-state on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, from 12:30-5:00 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Pastor Richard Ervin as the Eulogist. Burial in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
