Mary Jean Russell's Obituary
Mary Jean King Russell, “Sweet Honnee”, 80, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in a local healthcare facility. Mary, lovingly known as “Sweet Honnee,” was born on January 30, 1945, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Ananias and Nina Russell.
Mary graduated from Riverside High School, where she studied Cosmetology. She enjoyed a long career as a self-employed beautician and later worked in the Security/Dispatch department at Erlanger Hospital. One of her greatest passions was being part of the Ham Radio community, where she was known by her handle “Sweet Honnee.” Mary was also an avid crafter, with a particular love for crochet and various other crafts. She found joy in creating beautiful handmade items and sharing her creations with family and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Jeffery Russell; and her sister, Dorothy Upshaw Jones.
She is survived by her beloved brothers, Ananias Russell, Bennett Russell, Joseph (Phyllis) Russell, and Willie (Sonya) Russell, all of Chattanooga; her sister, Patricia Wesley of Chattanooga; uncle, Walter Strong of Desoto, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close family friends.
Mary will be deeply missed for her kindness, her dedication to her family, and her warm, loving spirit. Her memory will forever be cherished by those whose lives she touched.
Mary will lie-in-state on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 12 noon in the Chapel with Dr. Darrell Wesley as the Eulogist. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
