Margie Butler Byrd's Obituary
Margie Eleanor Butler Byrd, 96, of Chattanooga, left this world on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in the comfort of her home with her baby girl holding her hand. She was born June 3, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois to Lizzie Mae Smith. Upon Lizzie's untimely death, Margie was adopted by her mother’s first cousins, Alvertus and Ila Lowe Butler.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gradye Byrd, Sr.; sisters, Mary Glasper and Jessie Varner; son-in-law, Ernest Thomas, Sr.; and grandson, Derrick Bush.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Cynthia Byrd (Ernest, Sr.) Thomas, Valerie Byrd (Eric) Penn, Sr., and Dennis O. (Darlene) Byrd, Jr., all of Chattanooga, TN; 15 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren; devoted niece, Malvalean Long of Prattville, AL; dear friends, Barbara Bonds, Walter and Bernadette Evans, Brenda Martin, Delores Lewis, and Connie Williams; several nieces; nephews, cousins, and children she raised and nurtured over the years; The Ladies’ Fellowship of Grace Baptist Tabernacle, Dr. Marshall Robinson, PhD., UHC and Carebridge, Dr. John Boldt, MD, and Dr. Monica Gefter, MD for their prayers and words of comfort, and Taylor Funeral Home for their phenomenal service.
Margie will lie-in-state on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Community Missionary Baptist Church with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 noon at the church with Pastor Emeritus Marshall Robinson as the Eulogist. Burial in Lakewood Memory Gardens East. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home of Chattanooga, Inc.
