Margaret Leona Smith's Obituary
Margaret L. Smith, 96, of Chattanooga, left her earthly home and transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at her residence. She was born February 22, 1928 to James and Prudence Hickman. She was reared in Bakewell, Tennessee and educated in the Hamilton County School System. Miss Margaret was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1946. She united with New Mt. Annie Baptist Church in her early teen years. She was a faithful and committed member. She was an active and willing Christian worker, serving and participating in various ministries. She served on the Missionary Society, was the former Church Clerk, and served on the Kitchen Committee. During her active years, Margaret attended church as much as possible until she no longer was able to be there in person due to her declining health. Today, she is still a member of New Mt. Annie Baptist Church. Margaret was married to Newell B. Smith who preceded her in death. Her oldest son, Thomas “Milo” Smith also preceded her in death 4 days prior to her passing. But she is once again with them. She is also once again with her parents, James and Prudence Hickman; 9 siblings; a granddaughter, Andrea Swafford; and son-in-law, James C. Swafford, Jr. Survivors who will cherish memories of her are 4 daughters, Linda Swafford, Yolanda Davis, both of Soddy Daisy, TN, Margaret “Ann” Smith, and Darlene Davenport, both of Chattanooga; one son, Gralin Smith of Chattanooga; a loving daughter-in-law, Althea Word Smith; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; a special “sister” friend, Mrs. Oralee Moore; and her New Mt. Annie Church Family. Margaret will lie-in-state on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Tyrus Chislom as the eulogist. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Bakewell, Tennessee.
