Leonard Alfonzo Dixon's Obituary
Leonard Alfonzo “Big D” Dixon, 75, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022, in a local hospital. He was born June 5, 1947 to the late Loretha and Lemon Dixon in Sarasota, Florida. He was a 1965 graduate of Booker High School where he played the bass clarinet in the concert band and was an active member of the baseball and football teams. He briefly attended Savannah State before being drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in Vietnam. “Big D”, as he was affectionately known, moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee after his service in the military, where he met his forever love and raised his family. He was a hard worker and spent 25 years employed at Wheland Foundry and 27 years at Lookout Mountain Golf and Country Club. He had a huge giving heart and an exceptional gift of gab. Leonard was a member of Greater Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church until his health prevented his physical attendance. He was a loving husband to the love of his life Shirley Shropshire Dixon, and a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Shirley Dixon, three children; Paula (Gerald) Williams, Vicki (William) Simmons, and Darryl (Johnita) Harris all of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Jeremy Simmons of Houston, TX, Brian Williams of Locust Grove, GA, Dannielle Harris of Chattanooga, and Corey Williams of Atlanta; three great-grandchildern; two sisters, Loreda (Arthur) Williams and Lynn Thomas both of Sarasota, FL, two brothers, Frank (Diane) Gaines of Sarasota and Leon (Renita) Dixon of Miami, FL, devoted sister-in-law, Dorothy (Calvin) Mays of Chattanooga; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Pastor J. W. Cole will be the eulogist.
