Joseph Mitchell Stevenson Sr.'s Obituary
Joseph Mitchell Stevenson, Sr., 58, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 4, 2020 in a local hospital. He attended Chattanooga Public Schools and began his interest in sports at Orchard Knob Middle School and excelled in football there. He played on the football team at Riverside High School, receiving the award for Defensive Lineman in 1979. He was a 1980 graduate of Riverside. Joseph also ran track and field, did shot putt, and was considered an “All Star Athlete” at Carver Recreation Center. He furthered his education at Knoxville College. Joseph’s other hobbies included fishing, dancing, and singing. He loved his family and was best known for his generous spirit. Joseph was employed by Steel Warehouse, Inc. until his untimely passing. He also worked at Wheland Foundry for 20+ years. Joseph accepted Christ at an early age at Gospel Lighthouse Cumberland Presbyterian Church under Reverend H. H. Sheller. Seeking a higher level of spiritual knowledge, he later joined Rock Island Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor Ronald Cook, Sr. After his union to Pastor Cynthia Stevenson, Joseph dedicated himself to God’s Tabernacle Praise and Worship Church, where he was an usher, choir member, and member of the Men’s Praise Team. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph C. and Thelma Stevenson; grandparents; several aunts; uncles; and cousins. Survivors include his wife, Pastor Cynthia Stevenson; son, Joseph M. (Candy) Stevenson, II of Atlanta, GA, Reginald (Janet) Locklin, Marcus Locklin, and Larry Jennings, Jr., all of Chattanooga; daughter, LaKisha Locklin of Chattanooga; 25 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, Joann Stevenson, Tyrone (Annette) Stevenson, Demetrius (LaTelsa) Dawson, all of Chattanooga, Phyllis (Ivory) Reedus of Huntsville, AL, Anthony (Madolyn) Dennis of Atlanta, and Larry (Annie) Stevenson of Town Creek, AL; aunt, Pearl Sales; uncles, Leroy (Lucille) Stevenson, all of Chattanooga, and Collis Stevenson of Decatur, AL; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Tamara Wade of St. Louis, MO, Bishop John and Cecelia Howard, Priscilla Williams, all of Atlanta, Randy and Jackie Greyhouse of Anniston, AL, Bobby and Lisa Porter of Fort Knox, KY, Wayne, Wendell, Samuel, and Marshall (Tanyika) Thurman, all of Chattanooga; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Pastor Todd Lansden will be the eulogist.
