James Sims, Jr.'s Obituary
James C. Sims, Jr. was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Bonciel Robinson and James C. Sims (Rosie). Known at that time as, “Butch”, he attended Hamilton County Public Schools and was in the Riverside High School’s graduating Class of 1967.
After joining the United States Air Force in 1968, he met Jean Moore (Sims) the following year and married in November of 1972. A father to Tanza and a mother to Derrick, this union brought forth their youngest, Okyma. During his military tenure, James enjoyed inspecting aircrafts, particularly stealth, and his last assignment most, Spectro Oil Analyst, at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, NY.
A commitment to higher education and a love of numbers led James to Utica, NY, where he attended The Utica School of Commerce, receiving an Associate Degree in Accounting, and Elizabeth City State University, in Elizabeth City, NC, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.
That degree led him to his employment at the University, where he served as Bookstore Manager for three years, before returning to New York State. Once in New York, he secured his future by taking multiple civil service exams, including one he had a passion for, Transportation. By 1982, James was gainfully employed by Metropolitan Transit Authority of Manhattan, New York. He worked faithfully for 24 years before retiring in 2006. In 2007, James returned to his childhood home to care for his mother until her transition.
“Butch” was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Tyronne Sims (Rosie); his grandson, Jordan Holloman; and two great-granddaughters, Chardae Walker and Kree Moore.
James C. was a loving husband to, Jean Moore Sims; a dedicated father to Derrick Moore, Tanza Walker and Okyma Sims; a loyal brother to Ervin “Bronnie” Cousin (Kathy), Melvin “Pop” Cousin (Virginia), Gail Sims Odom, Anthony Sims (Martha) and Vincent Sims; the PROUDEST Grandfather of 6, great-grandfather of 16, and great-great-grandfather of 1. Of all the roles he’s had to fill in his life…his favorite was simply being, “Pop-Pop”. James has a massive host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
“As long as you’re giving your best…it will always be enough.”- Butch
