George McCrary, Sr.'s Obituary
George E. McCrary, Sr., 84, “Sam”, as he was affectionately known, of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at his residence. A proud graduate of Howard High School class of 1958, Sam carried the values of education, community, and music with him throughout his life. His roots in Chattanooga ran deep and his positive influence and efforts for his classmates and the St. Elmo community will be remembered and cherished.
Sam was known for his unapologetically big personality but with an even bigger heart. Whether through music that stirred the soul or stories that brought laughter to the table, he had a way of making people feel welcome. Sam found joy in gardening and fishing, often spending hours outdoors. Nothing brought him more happiness than cooking for others—especially during the holidays—when he would prepare meals that became treasured traditions. His BBQ and greens were the BEST!
Sam was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Ruth Hicks and stepfather, David C. Hicks; his uncle, and aunt, Eddie McCrary and Marion McCrary; and cousins, Roger McCrary and Reggie McCrary.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice Lynette Allen; his sons, Michael McCrary of Atlanta, GA and G. Eddie (Gail) McCrary, Jr. of Chattanooga, along with their daughters, Beatrice and Maeve; and Samuel A. McCrary and wife Tatiana of Atlanta, GA, with their children Keeli, Gabriel and Margot; cousins and their families, Rosalind Anderson and Joyce Oberton; and stepchildren and their families, Lena Patterson, Vickie Scales, Clifford Scales, Vincent Scales, and Steven Scales.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. Sam lie-in-state on Monday, October 27, 2025, from 1-5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 12 noon at New Anointing Pure Holiness Church of God with Dr. Eric Sims, Sr. as the Eulogist.
