Freeman E. Cooper, Jr.'s Obituary
Retired Chattanooga Police Chief Freeman E. Cooper, Jr., 70, departed this life on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at his residence after a battle with lung cancer. Chief Cooper lived a lifetime of service to his fellow man, serving his country during Vietnam then a 28-year career in law enforcement. Freeman was born to Freeman E., Sr. and Alberta Christine Cooper. He was a 1969 graduate of Howard High School and attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga before joining the U.S. Air Force. Chief Cooper graduated from the Chattanooga Police Academy in 1982. Like every recruit, his career began as an officer in patrol. He loved being out among the people trying to make a difference. A 1991 graduate of the FBI National Academy, Freeman worked his way up through the ranks becoming CPD’s first and only Executive Chief in 2004. Appointed to Police Chief in 2007 by Mayor Ron Littlefield, he served the city and its people until retirement in 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Lillian Barnett. Freeman is survived by his wife, Debra A. Cooper; blended family, J. Cody Lockhart, Cari Lockhart, Cooper Barnes, Laura, and Cora; his sons, Kory (Rebekah) Cooper and Daniel Cooper; daughters, TeKisha Murphy and JaCobi (Michael) Battles; seven grandchildren, Daryl, Jr., KorDarrius Murphy, Kory, II, Curtis, and Henry Cooper, Mykah Battles, and Ava Marie Cooper; great-grandchild, Devyn Roberts; brother, Isaac Cooper; sister, Frances Quarterman; many treasured nieces; nephews; cousins; and an abundance of cherished friends.
