Effie M. Jones' Obituary
Effie Mae Hull Jones, affectionately known as the matriarch of her family and lovingly called “Gramps” by those who knew and loved her, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the remarkable age of 101. She was the heart of her family and a source of strength, wisdom, faith, and unconditional love for generations. Effie was born on June 8, 1925, in York, Alabama, to the late Matt Hull and Willie Fluker Hull.
Effie married the late Johnnie Jones, and together they built a loving family, raising seven children. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother whose home was always filled with love, wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. As the matriarch of the family, she provided strength through every season of life and instilled in generations the values of faith, hard work, perseverance, and unconditional loyalty love.
A woman of unwavering faith, Mother Jones dedicated her life to serving God, loving her family, and uplifting those around her. For more than fifty years, she was a faithful and devoted member of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mothers Board and the Food Ministry. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of Jerusalem, the Avondale Ladies Guild, and the Circle Four Club. Her steadfast commitment to her church and community reflected the deep love she had for the Lord and her desire to be a blessing to others.
Beyond her service to the church, Mother Jones devoted herself to nurturing and guiding young people. She proudly served as the Boy Scout Den Mother, providing encouragement, leadership, and care to countless children and families throughout the years.
She worked faithfully for ServiceMaster for over sixty years, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment that inspired everyone who knew her. Her life was a testament to dedication, humility, grace, and service.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Willie Fluker; siblings, Johnnie Lee Hare and Joyce Hull Brown; children, Johnnie Mae Jones, Betty Mathis, and J.B. Jones; granddaughter, Joejuana Young; grandson, Leander Jones; and her great-grandson, Azariah Perkins.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories her children, Mattie Green, Willie Mae McGee, Vivian Sanders, and Lee (Veronica) Jones; her grandchildren, Lester (Gwen) Jones, Mercedes Jones, Harold Green, Jr., Tara (Eric) Kennedy, Eddie Jones, Darryl Jones, Terrance Simmons, Lynetta Jones, Delta (Magdalena) Mathis, Nakessia Jones, LaNetta Hudson, Stacie Sanders, Richard McGee, LeAnn Jones, Marcus Jones, Shelli Sanders, Bella Hammond, and Weston Hammond; her siblings, Ronald (Doris) Hull, Stanley (Becky) Hull, Glenn (Beverly) Hull, and Gloria Hull; her goddaughter, Julie (Bobby) West Hammond; her beloved godsons, Thomas (Belinda) McGee, Willie (Barbara) Kitchens, Barry Pankey, Albert (Paulette) McCullough, Timothy Rivers, and Bobby Green; her cherished friends, the “Golden Girls,” Mrs. Carrie Harden and Mrs. Georgia Fritz; her special niece, Mellenise Edwards; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Mother Jones leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, resilience, and family unity. Her gentle spirit, wise counsel, warm smile, and unwavering devotion to God and family will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know and love her. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched over her 101 extraordinary years. She taught by example, loved without condition, and trusted God through every season of life. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
Effie will lie-in-state on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon at the church with Pastor Anthony Williams as the Eulogist. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
