Doris Jean Lewis' Obituary
Doris Jean Lewis, 90, of Chattanooga, peacefully departed this life on Friday, March 14, 2026, in a local hospital. Born on January 17, 1936, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Ollie Bailey and Edward Everett, Doris Jean Lewis entered this world with a quiet strength that would one day echo through generations. From humble beginnings, she grew into a woman whose strength, grace, and unwavering faith would shape generations to come.
A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1955, she carried herself with dignity, wisdom, and quiet resilience throughout her life. She was not only a woman of strong character, but one whose nurturing spirit created a foundation of love that continues to flourish within her family today.
She was a devoted and faithful member of New Sholar Avenue Baptist Church, where she served diligently as an usher. Her commitment to her church reflected her deep faith and servant’s heart. She greeted all with warmth, kindness, and a welcoming spirit that made everyone feel seen and valued.
She was a woman of incredible strength, wisdom, and unconditional love, rightfully known as the matriarch of a rare and beautiful living legacy. Through her guidance, compassion, and sacrifice, she built a family rooted in unity, resilience, and love that spans four generations.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Lorene Lewis Robinson-Baldwin, her brothers-in-law, George Robinson and James E. Baldwin Sr. and her nephew, Anthony Robinson. Though they have gone before her, we take comfort in knowing their reunion is one of eternal peace.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving children, Curtis (Velma) Bigoms, Sr., Howard (Angela) Lewis, Kenneth (Angela) Cunningham, Pamela (Jerome) Lewis, Jacqueline (Charles) Williams, Michael Lewis, Sr., David (Patricia) Lewis, Samuel Lewis, and Cassandra (Walter) Lindsey. Her legacy continues through her 24 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, each a living testament to the life she lived and the love she gave so freely. She is also survived by her devoted nephews, Vincent Robinson and Greg Robinson; extended family members, Tracy Freeman, Shawantae (JaMichael) Caldwell; Angela Lewis, and Lisa Theus; the Kelly Family and the Silver family; church family, and dear friends whose lives were touched by her kindness and grace.
Doris will lie-in-state on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 1-5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 12:00 noon in the Chapel with Pastor Kenneth Ware as the Eulogist. Burial in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.
