Don Carnell Mayes' Obituary
Don Carnell Mayes, 71, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2023, in a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. He was born June 7, 1952, in Courtland, Alabama to John T. Mayes and Henry Mae Billings Mayes Beck. Don was a graduate of Howard High School Class of 1970. He accepted Christ at a young age and joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where he later became a faithful member of the Male Chorus, the Senior Usher Board, and the Mass Choir. He was a loyal employee of the Chattanooga Housing Authority for over 32 years. Don was a very nice and comical person who would give you all he had if you asked. Everyone that knew him loved him. Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy Mayes; and two sisters, Johnnie Mae Mayes Willingham and Jannie Mayes Vinson. Those left to cherish his memory are nine sisters, Brenda (Herman) Locklin, Carolyn Mayes, Thelma Westfield, Sharon (Timothy) Newson, all of Chattanooga, Delores (Alan) Custer of Smyrna, TN, Josiephine (Tommy) Elliott of Hillsboro, AL, Jerry Dismuke of Chattanooga, Lucy Mae Carlise of Lima, OH, and Rosezetta Hampton of Chattanooga; five brothers, Kelvin Clark, Larry (Carla) Mayes, Michael Mayes, Darryl (Robin) Mayes, all of Chattanooga, and Henry (Alice) Carter of Decatur, AL; a host of aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Don will lie-in-state on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 9 a.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor Wayne L. Johnson as the eulogist. Burial in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home of Chattanooga, Inc.
