Carrie Mell Fletcher's Obituary
Carrie Mell Allen Fletcher, 96, of Chattanooga, peacefully fell asleep on Friday, October 17, 2025. She was born on September 2, 1929, in Lafayette, Alabama and soon thereafter the family moved to the nearby town of Lanett, Alabama. Her parents were Ora and Annie Mae Allen. Carrie was the oldest of two girls and one boy.
On a trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee to visit her aunt, she met and soon thereafter married her husband of 72 years, Edward Fletcher. Born to that union were three daughters and one son. During Carrie’s residency in Chattanooga, to assist with the financial support of her young and thriving family and still spend most of her time with them, she did domestic work for a short period of time. Upon further secular education and training, she became a nurse’s assistant and worked several years at Erlanger Hospital where her natural care and concern for others were on full display as her patients always expressed their appreciation for the way they were being cared for and treated under her attentive and compassionate watch.
Carrie was a faithful and devoted member of Greater Tucker Missionary Baptist Church. Just like Anna the prophetess in the bible, she was never missing from church services and other spiritual activities unless it was not possible to attend due to sickness or other things, although that would seldom prevent her from attending. She served in various church capacities throughout the years as Sunday School Teacher, Usher Board II, Deaconess, Beautification department in oversight of flowers and plants, participated in Vacation Bible School, Mission Department, and initiated the group Partners in Prayer.
Carrie had a quiet demeanor but was a tower of faith and strength. She set a wonderful example as a wife, mother, grandmother. and friend. She would help anyone in need if it was in her power to do so and not only those she knew, but even strangers. She felt that God did not want her to turn anyone away even if it sometimes called for personal sacrifices.
Carrie was preceded in death by her supportive husband of 72 years, Edward Fletcher; her son, Douglas Edward Fletcher; mother and father; brother, William Thomas; grandson, Justin Crutcher; great-granddaughter, Carrie A. Carroll; great-grandson, Jared Carroll; and son-in-law, Herb Wallace.
Carrie leaves to cherish her memories and kind heart, her devoted daughters, Bertha Paulette Wallace of Levittown, PA, Carolyn Faye Fletcher, and Marshal Lynne (Spires L.) Baker, both of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren, Avis Lewis, Leslie (Tykeisha) Lewis, Cedric (Sylvia) Carroll, Marla (Jeffery) Carroll-Chunn, Daren Carroll, Demetrice (Tynescha) Baker, and Deljara Baker; sister, Darthy Allen; two sisters-in-law, Zola Chase and Dorothy Readus; one brother-in-law, Larry Fletcher; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends.
Although Carrie could no longer communicate as she once did, she would always hear “we love you mother”. The smiles and comfort on her face let us know that she not only heard us but felt truly loved and protected.
Carrie will lie-in-state on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 9 a.m. at Greater Tucker Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon at the church with Pastor Gary Hathaway as the Eulogist. Burial in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home of Chattanooga, Inc.
