Burry Johnson, Jr.'s Obituary
Burry Johnson, Jr., 78, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, June 12, 2023, in a local hospital. He was born on May 18, 1945, in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Asbury and Charlie Lou (Presley) Johnson, Sr. He was affectionately called “Razz” by his family and close friends. Burry attended Howard High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1968. He was a professional painter for 45 years in New York City. There he met his long-time companion, Barbara Keith. From that Union was born Jason and Nicole Johnson. Burry loved all types of music, fast cars, and taking pictures. He also loved to travel to Europe. Burry would always say something to brighten your day and put a smile on your face. After moving back to Chattanooga, 27 years ago, you could always find him painting or visiting flea markets until his health began to fail. He was preceded in death by his parents, Asbury and Charlie Lou Johnson; sister, Sally Hitchcock; brother, Pledger Johnson; sisters-in- law, Amy Johnson, Alphareipa Johnson, and Pearlene Johnson; brothers-in-law, Larry King, Sr. and Oran Hitchcock, Sr.; grandson, Jason Johnson Jr; nephews, Edward King Johnson, Oran Hitchcock, Jr., Joseph Hitchcock, Edwin L. Ervin, and Charles Hitchcock; and longtime companion, Barbara Keith. Survivors include his sons, Jason Johnson of Bronx, NY, Jason Brown of Austin, TX, Malcolm Brown of New York City, NY; daughters Nichole N’diaye of Bronx and Caledonia Brown of Brighton, England; brothers, devoted, Charlie Johnson, Sr., Edward (Rose) Johnson, both of Chattanooga, and Elijah (Senella) Johnson of Toledo, OH; sisters, Eara King of Chattanooga and Linda (Brad) Johnson of Jonesboro, GA; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Burry will lie-in-state on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
