Betty Jean Benford's Obituary
Betty Jean Benford, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, June 26, 2023, at her residence surrounded by family. She was born June 11, 1940, to Aggie, Sr. and Elizabeth Richardson. Betty was a 1961 graduate of Howard High School. She then attended Chattanooga State Community College. Betty retired from Erlanger Hospital after 40 years of dedicated service. She worked for the Election Commission for many years. Betty was a devoted and faithful member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church where she served as the Past President of the Usher’s Ministry. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Benford; parents, Aggie, Sr. and Elizabeth Richardson; brothers, James Harrington, Aggie Richardson, Jr., Matthew Richardson, and Tony Richardson; sister, Virginia Richardson; in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Benford. Survivors include her loving and dedicated children, Sandra Stegall, Anthony Benford, both of Chattanooga, Michael (Gwendolyn) Benford of Powder Springs, GA, and Ramon Benford of Chattanooga; sister, Angela Williams of Chattanooga; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces; nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. Betty will lie-in-state on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, from 1-5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Burial in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
