Leon Cooper

Leon Cooper, 65, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, January 28, 2022, in Ocala, Florida. He was born to the late Ruby Kate Cooper and Leroy McClure along with his twin on July 28, 1956, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from The Howard School in 1974 and continued taking courses at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was known for his boisterous laugh and jovial demeanor. He loved gospel music and would often be heard at home singing loudly to his Savior. He grew up at Mount Canaan Baptist Church and was also a part of a citywide choir and promoted and scheduled performances throughout the area. From there was a member of The Church of God in Christ where he coordinated the churches first television ministry and on to Non-denominational Churches faithfully serving as an usher for many years both locations until his health no longer made this possible Throughout his career, he served students in the Tennessee and Georgia School Systems as an In-School Suspension Supervisor. He used counseling skills to assist students in better management of their behaviors. He had model students assisting in his classroom. Leon would give the student assistants along with their parents a pool party every year full of food, music, fellowship, and fun. He was beloved by the students, school administrators and teachers. He simultaneously served youth living in Behavioral Health Foster Homes. He would on occasion prepare for the teens and staff his famous macaroni and cheese which everyone enjoyed. He concluded his career by continuing to provide support to those in need serving as a Community Counselor at a Mental Health In-patient Hospital in Ocala, Florida. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, relative and friend. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruby Kate Cooper; father Leroy McClure; identical twin brother Leroy Cooper; sister Shirley Ann Cooper; sister-in-law Cathy Cooper and father-in-law Bishop Harvey E. Robinson. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 33 years, Sheila Cooper, Ocala, FL; sons, Owen Cooper graduate of SCAD, St. Petersburg, FL; Quinnton Cooper graduating senior at Williams College in Williamstown, MA; brother Theodore Sanford, Chattanooga, TN; sister Effie Bryant, Chattanooga, TN; aunt Marjorine Cooper, Chattanooga, TN; mother-in-law Catherine J. Robinson, Ocala, FL; brothers-in-law, Lenny (Janice) Jazz Drummer/Teacher Robinson, Silver Spring, MD; Alex (Arnitra) Robinson, Ocala, FL; sisters-in-law Jackie (Pastor James) White ministers of music in Deland, FL; Gevie Robinson, Professor in St. Petersburg, FL and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and many other beloved relatives and cherished friends.
